Are you afraid of heights? Then you may want to look away now! For those of you who are still here, something pretty cool is coming to the Grote Kerk (Great Church) in Alkmaar.....you can climb to the top! Cool, eh?
Starting the 1st of May, you will be able to climb special scaffolding to the top of the church and experience an unparalleled view of Alkmaar, as well as be able to take a much closer look at 'The Last Judgement' which was painted on the ceiling in 1518.
It is going to work like this: A scaffolding staircase will take you to a platform 20m from the ground. From here, you can step through a church window to a little bridge inside the church where you can get up close to the celebrated vault painting. From the platform, you can the continue to climb another 20m (that's 40m above ground or 130ft!) to the tower of the church for one of the best views around!
You can climb the church from 1st May to 1st August 2018. There are special early bird tickets available for the month of May costing €7.50. Children five and under are only € 1.
Work has already started on building the exterior staircase and they are making good progress! Will you be one of the first to climb to the top?
